Check out this page for information about various organizations through which I do scientific outreach to the community. I've also included links to more information, so you can participate!
SciREN Triangle
SciREN is a graduate student-founded and run non-profit organization that seeks to create a network between local educators and researchers. We host annual Lesson Plan Workshops that teach scientists to write lesson plans based on their own research, and ensure that those lesson plans meet state and national curriculum standards. We then host networking events each year where educators can "shop around" for lesson plans to bring into their own classrooms. All SciREN lesson plans are available online for free, through the SciREN Portal.
By connecting educators and researchers, SciREN enhances STEM education in local schools, improves science literacy among students, and ensures that the information passed to students is current and accurate. In 2014, I became a founding member of SciREN Triangle, and serve as both the liaison to the SciREN Board of Directors, and the manager of SciREN Triangle's annual budget. SciREN Triangle holds its annual networking event at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. |

The North Carolina Science Festival
Each year, the North Carolina Science Festival sponsors its Invite-a-Scientist Program, which brings local scientists into local classrooms. Importantly, the science festival asks researchers to speak about why they're a scientists, and what they love most about science, in addition to presenting, or leading hands on activities, about their research. It's a great opportunity to show students what a real scientist looks like!
I participated in the NC Science Festival's Invite-a-Scientist program between 2014 and 2017, visiting both the Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy, in Raleigh, and NL Dillard Middle School, in Yanceyville. |
